The smallest member of the canine family, including wolves, coyotes, jackals and dogs. Foxes are found throughout America, Eurasia and Africa, inhabiting mainly forests, ravines and desert regions. Most foxes feed on rabbits, bird eggs, fruits, large insects, and carrion. They mate in the middle of winter. Pregnancy lasts 49-56 days. The fox bears 2-8 cubs in a den, which is often an enlarged groundhog burrow.
