Family Phasianidae. In poultry farms, male chickens are called cockerels or roosters; females, especially those over a year old, are called chickens; females younger than a year are called pullets; very young chicks of either sex are chicks; and castrated males are capons. The incubation period for hatching an egg is approximately 3 weeks. They feed on natural food, mainly consisting of worms, insects, seeds and vegetation.
