The breeding of ornamental koi carp began in the early 1800s. Magoi (wild black carp) were brought to Japan from China originally as a food source for rice farmers. 
Kin Matsuga Koi** - The name "Kin Matsuga" translates to "Golden Cone", and there is no better description for this fish. This variety originated in the 1950s by crossing Yamabuki Ogon (metallic gold carp) with Shiro Matsuga (carp with the characteristic Matsuga scale pattern). The ideal specimen should have a bright, uniform metallic yellow coloration throughout the body, without dull or burnt areas. The "bump" effect should be evenly distributed over the body with a consistent and symmetrical pattern. The outlines of the scales should not be blurred or smeared; clean and sharp edges indicate the highest quality of this variety. The thick and shiny skin enhances the metallic coloration, and such fish often occupy high places in exhibitions. Koi can grow to enormous sizes - under ideal conditions, some reach over 4 feet in length. They make excellent pets and often recognize their owners by allowing themselves to be fed from their hands. They feel best at temperatures of 15–25 °C, but can survive the winter at much lower temperatures.
In Japanese culture, koi symbolize perseverance, courage and success. They are mentioned many times in mythology - often as fish that swim against the current and turn into dragons.
Koi are omnivorous, but in captivity a diet consisting of algae and special koi food (pellets) is recommended.
