The breeding of ornamental koi carp began in the early 1800s. Magoi (wild black carp) were brought to Japan from China, originally as a food source for rice farmers. 
Asagi Koi - Patterns and Colors Asagi were among the first nishikigoi to be bred. Black magoi carp sometimes produced offspring with red bellies and occasional blue scales. Japanese rice farmers began to selectively breed these more colorful fish, and over time, the asagi evolved into the beautiful representatives we know today. High-quality Asagi have a pure white or light blue head, a dark blue back with a contrasting white or light blue mesh pattern. They should have rich red (chi) spots on the cheeks and pectoral fins, and a prominent red belly that does not rise above the lateral line of the carp.
Koi can grow to enormous sizes - under ideal conditions, some reach over 4 feet in length. They make excellent pets and often recognize their owners, allowing themselves to be fed from their hands. They feel best at temperatures of 15-25 °C, but can survive the winter in much colder temperatures.
In Japanese culture, koi symbolize perseverance, courage and success. They are mentioned numerous times in mythology - often as fish swimming against the current and transforming into dragons.
Koi are omnivorous, but in captivity a diet consisting of algae and special koi food (pellets) is recommended.
