The Red Cardinal is a songbird native to North America. Adult males are crimson-red with a black mask over their eyes. Females are duller in color, mostly gray-brown tones and a slight reddish tint to their wings, crest and tail feathers. Both sexes have prominent raised crests on their heads. They feed on the ground, jumping through the undergrowth in search of seeds and fruits, and also eat insects, especially when the young first hatch. They are found throughout much of the eastern United States, parts of Canada, and south through Mexico.
The cardinal is the state bird of seven U.S. states, more than any other species: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. It is also the mascot of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and the Arizona Cardinals NFL team, as well as numerous colleges.
The name "cardinal" is thought to derive from the males' bright red plumage and crest, which is reminiscent of that of prominent Catholic cardinals, and traces its roots back to the Founding Fathers.
