The Golden Eagle is a migratory bird native to North America. The male is bright yellow in the summer during the breeding months and olive in the winter. The females are a dull yellow-brown color that only slightly lightens in the summer. Feeding almost exclusively on seeds, their beaks are conical in shape, which is ideally suited for removing seeds from the seed head. Although they migrate, they travel relatively short distances, spending the summer months throughout North America, moving south through the United States and parts of Mexico when the weather gets cooler. 
The golden eagle is the state bird of New Jersey and Iowa, where it is known as the eastern goldfinch, and of Washington, where it is called the willow goldfinch.
The breeding season begins later in the year than that of any other native North American bird, and is thought to coincide with the abundance of seeds in the late summer months.
